History

kingbillbad

The King William IV hotel is on the corner of Fore Street and Station Road. This rounded brick building replaced an earlier Elizabethan-style one demolished in 1902. Mrs Thomas Coombe ran the inn in 1901. Around 1900, an omnibus coach service to Paignton operated from the hotel three times daily in summer months, and twice daily in winter months. The road junction by the hotel (Station Road) was built in 1830 to enable traffic coming from Bridgetown to get to Ashburton without having to pass through the rest of the upper town.

Haunted King Bill

totnesbad

A cook named Bill (who used to work, and indeed died, here) allegedly haunts this inn, situated in a historic main street. He is described as an elderly gent and mostly appears in the upper rooms of the pub. The building has previously been victim to strange poltergeist occurences sich as electrical problems and misterious moving objects. This has all been blamed on Old Bill (not the police, I hasten to add!)
